Millard J. Bienvenu, Sr. Patterns, characteristics and styles of interpersonal communication in adult men and women were investigated by use of an Interpersonal Communication Inventoy.

Development of the Inventory was based upon previous research in related areas of marital communication, parent-child communication, group therapy and intragroup communication. Item analysis yielded 50 items which discriminated between good and poor communicators.

Factors of good and poor communication are identified and discussed. Uses of the Inteversonul Communication Inventory in counseling, teaching and research are proposed. Use of effective interpersonal communication strategies by nurses in both personal and professional settings, may reduce stress, promote wellness, and therefore, improve overall quality of life. Drawing on both the literature and experiences as a longtime provider of care in the mental health field, the author offers multiple practical strategies, with specific examples of possible responses for effective communication.

Recommendations in this article are intended for nurses to consider as they seek healthy communication strategies that may be useful in both their personal and professional lives. Citation: Vertino, K. Communication is an integral part of life; without it, we would not survive. Verbal and non-verbal communication begins at birth and ends at death. We need communication not only to transmit information and knowledge to one another, but more importantly, to relate to one another as human beings around the world in the context of relationships, families, organizations, and nations.

The how, what, why, and wherefore of communication can either edify or harm us, as individuals, cultures, religions, and governments of countries, as we attempt to coexist. What we say, how we say it, and what we mean by it are extremely important, and can be life-changing. I recollect two teachers in elementary school.

To me, one was a kind, caring person; the other was mean and sarcastic. Students, especially children, are particularly vulnerable during their formative years. Adults, teachers, and other children have the power to either help us blossom as an individuals or to destroy our self-esteem, and thus impact our potential for life. A kind or cruel word, or facial expression, can mean the world to a child. These two teachers in my past were polar opposites, but both affected me deeply.

In our professional roles as nurses, we are responsible to care for persons who are ill. When ill, patients may be unable to speak or advocate for themselves. Vulnerable patients need our voices to speak for them. Due to our constant exposure to other human beings who are suffering, nurses are perfectly positioned to utilize effective interpersonal communication, and in doing so, support our own emotional, psychological, and spiritual development. There is a well-established link between team communication, worker morale, and patient safety.

Low morale contributes to high levels of stress, burnout, poor job satisfaction, and an overall poor quality of life. Controlling stress and burnout is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Regardless, tact remains an important competency, one which should be continually developed and routinely used when communicating with subordinates, peers and superiors in order to build cohesive, effective and efficient teams.

Consider a unit who has an infantryman originally from the Philippines who speaks Tagalog fluently. During a tactical questioning scenario in which a person of interest is speaking in that language this Soldier now becomes a key component to mission accomplishment.

Being able to employ this Soldier using his talents has now helped the team.

Throughout history we have born witness to countless examples of poor leadership where the leader has lacked self-control or the ability to self-regulate.

Improper attitudes and dictatorial leadership creates an environment of distrust and ultimately one of dissent. The final three components of emotional factors, balance and stability work closely together.

Each of these as personified and demonstrated by the leader can either positively or negatively affect their Soldiers. How a leader feels most definitely impacts how he or she interacts with others. Consider for a moment that one of your Soldiers has just received a Red Cross message as the result of a death in their family.

What are your actions? An emotionally charged individual may say something in the heat of the moment that they would have otherwise not said or have a message come across wrong. Your Soldiers will follow the example which you role model for them. A leader who lacks interpersonal communication skills such as tact will erode and ultimately destroy the very bedrock of trust within an organization. These are the skills that some believe can't be taught. This may be true, but time spent on thoughtful contemplation of what we do and how we do it is usually time well spent.

Researching and reflecting on this topic has raised my awareness of the importance of communication, including communication challenges such as providing constructive feedback and listening. Below, I attempt to share my findings and my experience. Effective leaders must be effective communicators, not just talkers.

An Interpersonal Communication Inventory

I don't think that statement needs explanation. Susan Tardanico 1a contributor to Forbeswrote that the 5 habits of highly effective communicators are as follow: Mind the say-do gap. Notice that these 5 habits have little to do with what one says but rather how one says it. Keeping your message simple and genuine will go a long way.

In addition, more than half of communication is nonverbal including body language, gestures, and eye contact. It is important to be aware of what you are saying nonverbally. Even a brief moment of checking your email during someone's presentation conveys a nonverbal message. Styles of communication vary. Although no style is superior, effective communicators know how to recognize and match their communication style with their audience whether it be their boss, peers, direct reports, or trainees. As leaders and educators, some of our most valuable and formative communication will be in the form of feedback.

However, the receiver may be left wondering what specifically they did that was great and wondering if there are areas that could be improved. When giving feedback, it is important to be positive if it is genuinebe specific, be immediate or at least timelyand be tough if needed, but not mean or rob the recipients of their dignity 3.

In my experience, the most underused and least perfected communication skill is listening.

In professional settings, individuals with authority should listen more i. To illustrate the truth of this statement, I asked the SYCL workshop attendees to pair up and do an exercise in listening.

Each pair chose one person to be a speaker and one to be a listener. The speaker was asked to talk about any topic they wanted to for 2 minutes. The listener's job was to listen and not say a word. Just listen. As I watched this exercise unfold, I observed listeners who were struggling not to speak, desperately wanting to share their own story, offer their advice, and provide their feedback.

This is more food-for-thought in our daily interactions. Finally, it was indeed a rare and somewhat terrifying opportunity to stand in front of the next generation of leaders and be asked to provide them with a few personal golden nuggets of professional advice. Initially, it was overwhelming, but once I really thought about what I have found to be important in my professional interactions, the following came to light: a Say what you mean and mean what you say even when it's easier to say what you think people want to hear.

And perhaps most importantly, e wrap it all up in a package of kindness.
